What Is Reconstructive Surgery?

Dr. Jacono was featured in Gotham Magazine to discuss the latest techniques in reconstructive surgery. These procedures help victims around the world, particularly those suffering from war wounds, birth defects, and domestic abuse. Jacono regularly embarks on medical missions and offers pro-bono treatment to children, teenagers, and adults who have no access to quality procedures.

“It is a duty of mine to give back,” says Dr. Jacono. “It can be easy, as a plastic surgeon, to get swept up in procedures that only focus on aesthetics. It’s a different matter to use your services for the good of humanity. Offering great services free of charge can be physically and emotionally exhausting, but in my opinion, the cost is worth the effort. There’s nothing as gratifying as helping.”

What, exactly, is reconstructive surgery? In simple terms, reconstructive surgery repairs parts of the body that have been compromised by disease, injury, or congenital defects. Cleft lip and palate repair is a perfect example of this kind of treatment. Reconstructive surgery is especially impactful in that it usually offers aesthetic and functional repairs. For example, a patient with a cleft lip will look more normal and will be able to eat and drink more easily after surgery.

“Reconstructive surgery covers a wide range of procedures,” says Dr. Jacono. “Breast reconstruction and limb reconstruction are very common, though facial reconstruction is my specialty. I am able to repair all sorts of conditions that dramatically affect a patient’s quality of life.”

Giving Back to the Global Community Through Reconstructive Surgery

As a top New York facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Jacono has a bustling practice with a client roster that includes actors, Wall Street billionaires, and Upper East Side socialites. His office is located on Park Avenue, but he has also earned a prestigious appointment as chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at North Shore University Hospital on Long Island. Simply put, Jacono is at the top of his game, and under normal circumstances only offers his services to the elite.

“I’ve been lucky enough to cultivate a very elevated clientele,” says Dr. Jacono. “I owe this in large part to the efficacy of my surgical techniques. Few others in my field have mastered the techniques I’ve pioneered. The Extended Deep-Plane Facelift is my signature method. It offers results that look natural, not tight and pulled. I’ve been at the forefront of these advancements.” As accomplished as Dr. Jacono is in the United States, however, he is incredibly committed to rehabilitation.

He was the National Chairman of the FACE TO FACE Committee for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. FACE TO FACE is a national nonprofit that offers pro-bono consultation and surgery to victims of domestic violence. He has also chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES, an annual benefit for survivors of domestic abuse, for over a decade. To date, he has provided pro-bono reconstructive surgery to over 100 female victims of partner violence.

Reconstructive Surgery Philanthropy

What’s more, Dr. Jacono is dedicated to providing medical care to those who live in poorer countries. Every year, he goes on at least two medical missions to places like Ecuador, Colombia, and even Thailand. Partnering with the HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) Foundation and Healing the Children, Dr. Jacono has performed surgery on hundreds of children. These patients typically suffer from conditions like cleft lip and cleft palate. They also suffer from microtia, a condition in which patients are born without ear cartilage.

“My philanthropic work has become a touchstone of my career,” says Dr. Jacono. “Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I feel incredibly grateful to have the skills to give people medical care who wouldn’t otherwise have access to it.”

Dr. Jacono has long been a proponent of philanthropic endeavors. In fact, his dedication to medical nonprofit causes stems from his childhood. He used to take the school bus with a classmate who had a cleft lip.

“Nobody wanted to sit with her,” says Dr. Jacono. “They would make fun of her, pull her hair, and call her names. But after she had surgery, her life changed. She looked normal, and suddenly, everyone wanted to be her friend. I was amazed by how much of a difference the surgery made. It inspired me to become a doctor.”
