What Is African American Rhinoplasty?

Every year, thousands of men and women consult plastic surgeons to correct and improve the appearance of their noses. Usually, these alterations are cosmetic, though some people undergo treatment to fix problems like deviated septum and breathing troubles. Roughly 15% of these potential surgical patients are African-American. This number is always on the rise.

What Types of Noses Do African Americans Have?

Ethnicity plays a role in the shape and size of the nose. Many of Dr. Jacono’s African-American patients are unhappy with the nasal profile they were born with, while others want to correct their noses after an injury or accident.

On average, African American patients tend to have:

  • A lower, flatter, and/or a wider nasal bridge
  • Wider nostrils
  • A broader nasal tip that lacks definition

African American patients seek out Dr. Jacono’s expertise because he tailors his approach to individual needs. Dr. Jacono delivers the best outcomes because he understands characteristics unique to each race and ethnicity. He works tirelessly to deliver outstanding results without sacrificing his patients’ identities.

What Is the Difference Between Rhinoplasty and Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

There are a few differences between standard rhinoplasty and ethnic rhinoplasty. Standard (Caucasian) rhinoplasty tends to focus on reducing dorsal humps and refining droopy nasal tips. African-American rhinoplasty, on the other hand, usually focuses on correcting wide tip cartilage, increasing nasal projection, and adding proper support. Dr. Jacono’s African American patients are commonly dissatisfied with the size and width of their nostrils.

To refine African American noses, Dr. Jacono uses tip and strut grafts to add structure and definition to the nasal tip. To reduce the width of the nasal bridge, he narrows the nasal bones and brings them closer together. He also performs a specialized procedure called an alar base reduction. During this alar base reduction, small incisions are made on either nostril, with a precise amount of tissue removed. The incisions heal seamlessly with fine sutures.

In order to raise flat nasal bridges, Dr. Jacono adds to the nose rather than removes bone and cartilage. He does this by harvesting cartilage grafts from the nasal septum, from the ears, or from the ribs. The site of extraction largely depends on how much cartilage is required to add nasal support.

If patients do not want cartilage grafting, Dr. Jacono uses nasal bridge implants. These are made of Medpor, Goretex, or other durable materials. He prefers to use cartilage, as it looks and feels more natural, but implants offer excellent results.

For those who do not want surgery, Dr. Jacono is able to augment the nasal bridge with injectable fillers called an injectable rhinoplasty. For this purpose, he usually uses Restylane, a reliable hyaluronic acid filler.
