Non-Surgical Lip Augmentation

According to the American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery, lip augmentation using injectable fillers is one of the most common facial plastic procedures performed. In fact, the number of people who come to Dr. Jacono’s office for it, as well as to other cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons, has increased more than any other facial procedure.

Lip fillers are a great option when you want fuller lips, whether they’ve thinned out due to aging or because you have naturally thin lips; to reshape lips that might be disproportionate in some way, such as those that naturally turn downwards; to better define the cupid’s bow; and/or to minimize any lipstick bleed lines.

Temporary Lip Fillers

The most common injectable fillers used for lips are the hyaluronic-acid-based fillers like the Restylane family of products and the Juvederm family of products. I say family because there are many different formulations of each like Restylane Silk, Restylane Defyne, Juvederm Volbella, and Juvederm Vollure. These companies have made many subtypes and different practitioners will choose them because they have different properties that they like. There is no perfect hyaluronic filler and they all do a great job, it’s just the doctor’s preference. All temporary lip fillers will last only from four to six months. Because the lips move so much, the filler tends to degrade faster than if it was injected into your cheeks, eyelids, or nose.

The traditional technique involves injecting the filler into the lip (or vermillion) border and filling the lip as you withdraw the needle filling the lip like a sausage is filled. This makes the lip one shape throughout and blunts the natural contours of the lip and cupid’s bow. The lip looks unnatural and overstuffed.

Instead, Dr. Jacono uses the classification system he developed for the placement of the fillers. This allows him to precisely target fifteen different anatomic zones on the lips: at the visible portion of the lip (the vermillion), the outer mouth (laugh lines), edges of the lips (lipstick lines), and the inner lip, with much more natural results. As everyone’s lips are different, in some patients Dr. Jacono only needs to inject three zones, and another ten zones to attain the correct size and proportional shape. This allows him to create bespoke lips for his Park Avenue patients that are beautiful, full, and enviable but not plastic. Many of his patients request what is called French Lips, a more voluptuous yet still balanced lip. Restylane or Juvederm injections are used to sculpt the lips so that the central portion of the upper lip is pouty, and the inside of the lip is rolled out. It gives a lovely and natural shape to the lips.

Permanent Lip Injections

While most lip injections are temporary, silicone injections are permanent. Silicone is not FDA-approved for use in the lips, and Dr. Jacono does not use it. There is a small but real risk that the lip can react to the Silicone and create nodules and reactive tissue called granulomas causing lumpiness and irregularities, even when it is injected perfectly. This can happen even 10 years after it is injected. Additionally, as you age, and your lip thins, the silicone can show through like an unsightly roll in the lip. Dr. Jacono has performed hundreds of surgeries to recontour the lips of patients who had silicone injections with good doctors; it is not the technique it is the material. He will make an incision line inside the lip to access the material and recontour it. For this reason, Dr. Jacono will not inject silicone,
