the Vertical Neck Bands
The term platysmaplasty refers to the cosmetic procedure that involves surgical reconstruction of the neck muscles called the platysma. This procedure is performed specifically to rejuvenate both the neck area and under the chin.
The neck contains a thin, broad sheet of muscles called the platysma and it is positioned on each side of the neck. The platysma is divided into two separate and distinct sides, with the right and left platysma muscle meeting in the center of the neck. As we age, the tissue and fibers that connect the platysma to the overlying skin begin to weaken and lose their elasticity. The connection between the two platysma muscle also weakens and separates as the muscles sag. As the skin and muscle continues to become progressively weaker and more lax, unwanted cosmetic issues begin to develop.
These unwanted issues include:
- The appearance of unsightly lines / vertical neck bands
- Double chin
- Loose, sagging neck skin which is commonly called a "turkey wattle"
- Fatty jowls in the neck and chin region
During the platysmaplasty procedure, Dr. Jacono will tighten the platysma muscle under the chin at its weakest point.

Understanding the Corset Platysmaplasty Procedure
As both a facial plastic surgeon and head and neck surgery specialist, Dr. Jacono will begin the platysmaplasty neck lift by making a small and discreetly hidden incision beneath your chin of approximately 1 centimeter. Through this small incision, Dr Jacono uses fiber optic telescopes called endoscopes to visualize and operate on the extra fat and loosening muscles that have developed. With special endoscopic instruments he will remove the excess fat in the center of the neck called the inter-platysmal and sub-platysmal fat, reduce the excess loosened platysma, and join both sides of the platysma muscle to each other suturing them together in a technique called a corset platysmaplasty. By joining them together, the muscle that was sagging tightens the muscles up under the chin, creating a single sheet of muscle, called a midline platysma plication. This single sheet of platysma muscle will them be a resistant barrier to neck bands forming.

His technique will not only improve the definition of a patient's jawline, but it will also tighten and smooth the neck leaving the patient looking rejuvenated and natural.
Candidates for a Platysmaplasty? Platysmaplasty Cost
Those patients with moderate aging of the neck usually between the ages of 40 and the late fifties are a candidate for a platysmaplasty. With more significant aging and heavier drooping neck, the platysmaplasty must be combined with a necklift surgery. In a necklift an additional incision is made behind the ears so the platysma muscle can be lifted from the sides in addition to the center. Extra skin will also be removed behind the ear.
The cost of an isolated platysmaplasty is much less than a necklift surgery.

Platysmaplasty Recovery
Immediately after surgery, patients may experience a tight feeling in the neck. This is extremely normal and will subside gradually as the healing process continues. The recovery time for a platysmaplasty procedure involves a few days of downtime. Some patients may experience some bruising and swelling around the jawline, neck, and ears which usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. Your initial results of the neck lift will be visible immediately and will continue to improve over next few weeks.
