Information About Hairline lowering and Forehead Reduction Procedures in New York, NY
What Is Forehead Reduction Surgery?
A large portion of men around the world suffers from high hairlines and excessively long or large foreheads. 25-30% of women of all ages also experience this problem. For the vast majority of Dr. Jacono’s patients, these issues are caused by aging, hair loss, and genetic factors.
High hairlines that expose more forehead skin than desired can contribute to a number of emotional difficulties. These include low self-esteem and an overall lack of confidence. Larger foreheads can also detract from other facial features, diminishing harmony and worsening asymmetry.
Hairline lowering surgery, or forehead reduction surgery, addresses these aesthetic concerns. The procedure aims to readjust the position of the hairline for a more desirable balance between the forehead and the face. The procedure is relatively quick and simple, and its results are permanent.
What to Expect from a Forehead Reduction Procedure
Depending on the patient, Dr. Jacono will use one of two different approaches for forehead reduction surgery. The first of these surgically lowers the hairline by moving the scalp forward and then removing excess skin. The second technique involves grafting hair follicles from the patient and reimplanting them within the hairline and forehead region. This makes the forehead appear smaller or shorter, and more balanced.
For patients who choose to undergo hairline lowering surgery, Dr. Jacono excises a strip of forehead skin just before the hairline. Because of the incision’s placement, the resulting scar will be less visible. Dr. Jacono’s expertise in scar reduction techniques, including his minimally invasive surgical approach, ensure that results look natural. Once healed, scars are very difficult to see.
Patients who do not want a surgical procedure may still lower their hairline. Dr. Jacono can transplant hair follicles in Neograft hair transplantation. He does this by harvesting healthy hair follicles from the donor area (usually the back of the head) and grafting them into the hairline. This creates a denser, lower, and more attractive hairline. What Are the Risks of Forehead Reduction Surgery?
As with any surgery, there are a few risks associated with forehead reduction surgery. These include pain, bleeding, changes in expression, poor wound healing, and prolonged swelling. Bruising may also extend down to the under-eye area. In some cases, there may be hair loss around the scar.
Patients should be aware that these complications are quite rare. Dr. Jacono’s skill and expertise usually make for a seamless surgical and recovery process.
How Long Is Recovery After Forehead Reduction Surgery?
Most patients see an immediate result after surgery and can usually return to work after 2 weeks. During the recovery period, it is important to follow all of Dr. Jacono’s directions to ensure proper healing. The outcome may not reach its full potential if the wound is not adequately cared for.
Typically, patients experience numbness around the incision area, which can last for a few weeks. A tight wrap is placed around the forehead to limit swelling. A cold compress should be used over the next few days. This further limit swelling.
At some point, most patients will feel a degree of pain or discomfort at the incision site. This can be controlled using pain medication. After 5 to 7 days, Dr. Jacono will remove stitches and track healing progress.
Who Are Good Candidates for Forehead Reduction Surgery?
Any man or woman unhappy with the size of their forehead is a good candidate for a surgical reduction procedure. People who have especially high hairlines are also excellent candidates for treatment.
Patients should be in good general health and not smoke. Prospective patients who smoke should consider quitting a few weeks prior to the procedure. Unfortunately, smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol can negatively impact the surgical and healing process.
