What Does a Platysmaplasty Do?
the Vertical Neck Bands
The platysmaplasty is a surgical procedure that reconstructs and rejuvenates the thin sheet of neck muscle known as the platysma. The platysma is divided into two distinct sides in the neck’s center.
As we age, the tissue that connects the platysma to the overlying neck skin begins to lose its elasticity. The muscles accordingly sag, and unwanted cosmetic issues begin to develop. These problems include:
- Double chin
- Lines and vertical neck bands
- Loose, sagging neck skin
- Fatty jowls in the neck and chin
This surgery not only aims to tighten the neck but improve jawline definition. This leaves the patient looking naturally younger.
What Are Platysmal Bands?
Platysmal bands are vertical cords that appear on the neck and are caused by age-induced skin laxity and loss of muscle tone. These bands can cause sagging and other unsightly cosmetic issues, like a turkey neck.

How Is a Platysmaplasty Performed?
As both a facial plastic surgeon and head and neck surgery specialist, Dr. Jacono will begin the platysmaplasty neck lift by making a small and discreetly hidden incision beneath your chin of approximately 1 centimeter. Through this small incision, Dr. Jacono uses fiber optic telescopes called endoscopes to visualize and operate on the developed extra fat and loosening muscles.
With special endoscopic instruments, he will remove the excess fat in the center of the neck called the inter-platysmal and sub-platysmal fat. He then will reduce the excess loosened platysma and join both sides of the platysma muscle to each other suturing them together. This technique is called a corset platysmaplasty.
By joining them together, the muscle that was sagging tightens the muscles up under the chin, creating a single sheet of muscle, called a midline platysma plication. This single sheet of platysma muscle will be a resistant barrier to neck bands forming.
Platysmaplasty: How Long Does It Take to Recover from This Procedure?
After surgery, patients may experience some neck tightness. This is normal and will subside as the healing process continues.
Recovery from a platysmaplasty involves a few days of downtime. Patients are advised to refrain from any and all strenuous physical activity.
Some patients may experience bruising and swelling around the jawline, neck, and ears. These symptoms typically subside within 24 to 48 hours.
Initial neck lift results will be immediately visible and will improve over the course of a few weeks.
What is the Cost?
The cost of an isolated platysmaplasty is much less than that of a more complete neck lift surgery. To determine the actual cost, it is best to schedule a consultation to speak with Dr. Jacono to access what is needed and at what cost.
Am I a Candidate For This Procedure?
The vast majority of patients are between the ages of 40 and 60. They all commonly experience some moderate neck aging.
If the neck sags too much, the platysmaplasty can be combined with a surgical neck lift. During a neck lift, Dr. Jacono makes additional incisions behind the ears. The platysma is then lifted through these small incisions. Extra skin is removed behind the ears, and the incisions are closed.
