According to Top Facial Plastic Surgeon, the Procedure is Gaining Popularity
New York, NY (December 27, 2013) – What’s the next big thing in male cosmetic surgery? Andrew Jacono, M.D., F.A.C.S., director of the New York Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery, reviews the forthcoming trend for men in 2014 – jaw augmentation.
It’s no secret that aesthetic plastic surgery is quickly gaining favor among the male population in the United States – according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men had almost one million cosmetic procedures in 2012. This number marks an increase of over 106 percent from 1997, and Dr. Jacono anticipates that it will continue to grow.
While ASAPS reports that the top five surgical procedures for men last year were liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast reduction to treat enlarged male breast, and otoplasty (ear surgery), Dr. Jacono reports a rise in men seeking gonial angle (jawline) implants in his practice.
The driving factor behind the trend is Americans’ fixation on celebrity culture, says Dr. Jacono. “You’ll notice that the world’s most handsome celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and David Beckham, have one thing in common – a very angular jawline. Due to the constant exposure of these celebs in entertainment weeklies, gossip sites, and social media, we’ve come to regard these celebrities as our standards of beauty, and as a result, procedures to recreate their strong jawlines have become increasingly popular.”
The “Golden Proportion” explains why we perceive a strong jaw to be attractive in men. A unique ratio accepted globally as the standard in beauty, the “Golden Proportion” describes the ideal relationship regarding length and proportion within individual facial features or the relationship of different features to each other. For men, the right balance brings more masculinity to the face.
After an in-depth consultation that includes the use of the VECTRA M3 Imaging System to help analyze the face and set goals for surgery, Dr. Jacono customizes an implant. The implants are generally placed through the mouth with incisions inside the mouth, further back along the jawline, at the crease where the inside of the cheek and gums meet. The surgery lasts about one to two hours, and healing time is about one week, depending on the patient. The cost of jaw augmentation varies and will be discussed during your consultation.
