Jaw implants are also referred to as gonial angle implants because they augment the angle of the jaw (the gonial angle). While this is common for women and men with small jaws, it also brings more masculinity and balance to the male face. These implants are generally placed through incisions hidden inside the mouth, further back along the jawline, at the crease where the inside of your lower lips and gums meet.
The material most commonly used in jaw implants is a material called Medpor® which your body grows into. It is more stable is more stable than silicone. The jaw implants are then shaped to match the jaw line and adhere tightly along that contour. The implant is ultimately held in place with two to three titanium screws. This procedure is repeated on the opposite side. The incision is closed in layers so that there is a watertight seal to keep the oral fluids out of the wound. Insertion of a Jaw Implant usually takes about one to two hours.

Jaw implants are different than chin implants, but people with small jaw angles often have weak chins and could benefit from a chin augmentation procedure at the same time. Interestingly, chin augmentation can improve the appearance of the nose making it look smaller. A chin that is weak will make a larger nose the pinnacle of the face drawing attention to it. An appropriately sized chin after an augmentation will balance the lower face with the mid section of the face drawing attention away from a larger nose. Chin augmentation will also reduce the appearance of early jowling along the neck and jawline, creating a mini face lift appearance.

When performing chin augmentation, less is more. An overly strong chin can look masculine in a woman, and like Abe Lincoln in a man. As a general rule, in women the ideal location of the chin should be slightly or just behind a plumb line drawn straight down from where the nose and lip meet. In men, it should be at this line or slightly in front of it. In men a stronger square chin and jawline is ideal. in women a chin that is softer and comes to more of a point (not pointy) is desirable. Many people are afraid of chin augmentation surgery because many doctors use implants that exaggerate the area called “button” chin implants that only come in small, medium and large and do not look natural. Chin implants come in so hundreds of different shapes and sizes, so that the correct implant shape to harmonize with your cheeks and other facial features can be chosen. This is the artistry of plastic surgery.
Chin augmentation surgery is performed through a small incision inside the lower lip between it and the gums or in the natural crease line just underneath the chin. The overlying tissues are lifted of the chin bone creating a space where an implant can be placed over the deficient bone of the skeleton. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions, and the scar is usually imperceptible. Doctor Jacono performs this procedure with both approaches.
